Fall 2022

3 week project

This project was inspired by difficulties that I have faced while scuba diving. It can be a dangerous hobby ranging from drowning to falling on sharp and slippery rocks. I want to make diving as safe as possible to reduce the number of deaths from scuba diving every year.

Multi functional dive boot with built in fins and clackers

Problem

Holding fins while entering and exiting reduces mobility and balance. Equipping the fins can also be difficult in high current waters.

Divers carry about 80 lb of gear when diving which makes entering and exiting the water dangerous. Slippery rocks or lose ground could cause a diver to fall and injure themselves.

Low visibility greatly impacts a divers ability to find their buddy. If a diver runs out of air and can not find their buddy the consequences could be deadly.

User

Name: Alex Green

Age: 34

Occupation: Software Developer

Alex is an avid scuba diver who enjoys exploring the underwater world. He often dives with his buddy and has had some close calls while entering the water from the shore. He is also concerned about losing sight of his buddy while diving and wants a better way to stay connected.

Alex needs a reliable and easy-to-use solution for entering the water from the shore safely. He wants a product that can help him navigate through rough waves and avoid injury. He also needs a system for staying connected with his buddy while diving, including a way to easily locate them in case of an emergency. Alex is an experienced scuba diver who takes safety seriously. He has also experienced the anxiety of losing sight of his buddy while diving, which can be dangerous and stressful. He wants a solution that can help him feel more confident and safe while diving.

Goal

Create a durable scuba diving product that removes an obstical to entering the water and create a hands free method for finding a lost dive buddy.

Ideation

Fin rotates to the front to be in use while swimming or flipped to the back to be used while walking.

The large blue button is easy to find and press, even with neoprene gloves on.

The fin is hooked onto the ankle while walking which can be released by pressing down on the hook

Entering the water can be dangerous with many variables. Not holding fins gives the diver more balance which provides a safer entry.

Final

Flip has thick soles and toe guard to protect against dangerous terrain.

5mm neoprene keeps the diver well insolated in 60 degree water.

Large buttons and touch points give user easy control while wearing neoprene gloves.

Titanium Clacker creates sound to contact dive buddy when lost.

Titanium is a durable material that will not corrode in salt water.

It creates a sharp clack sound which can be clearly heard through the murky water.

Equipping the clacker to the boot creates a hands free tool.
